Our History
The
Read-Aloud Volunteer Program was founded in 1995 by the late
Dr. Marilyn Nye. Dr. Nye was an authority on children's literature
and a professor in the Department of Teacher Education at California
State University, Hayward for 25 years. She began the program at
Downer Elementary School in San Pablo, California based upon the
principles of the highly successful Oregon Children's foundation
SMART program (Start Making A Reader Today).
Today,
over 200 volunteers read every week to children at schools in the
West Contra Costa Unified School District. The program is funded
by generous contributions from businesses, organizations, and individuals
throughout the community. The current board of directors is committed
to significantly expanding the program over the next few years and
perpetuating Dr. Nye's vision.

"This
is not a tutoring program. It's a powerful and positive role-modeling
experience and it consistently enriches the lives of the students
who participate on a multitude of levels."
